Dining at The Mews, Barbados

Dining at The Mews with gorgeous local art

It’s 6:00 pm and the Concierge team and I arrive at the Mews for a Concierge Party to experience a firsthand taste of their new “Farm to Table” menu. The Mews is a “not so typical” eatery nestled off a side street in the hustle and bustle of the 2nd Street neighbourhood in Holetown, Barbados. We’re super excited, as we love to have a firsthand experience to ensure that our guests are having the very best. Ladies and gentlemen…The Mews did not disappoint.

Sophie, head hostess, greets us warmly at the door then bids us to have a seat and relax. We choose a cozy nook with soft pillows and talk amongst our selves, admiring the low lighting; beautiful art on the walls, by local talent Jeena Chatrani. (She paints entirely with palette knives) The vibrant depiction of sea turtles remind us of the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea, a mere 5 minutes walk away from us. Chris, the charming owner of The Mews, walks over to our table, happy to see us all and offers us a choice of two locally made cocktails. A Golden Apple Sour or a dreamy Passion Fruit concoction both made with local rum. Unable to decide which of the two delectable mixes to try, I ask for a minute. Chris, gentleman that he is, gives me two minutes! I order, he returns and I fall deeply in love with the refreshingly tart Golden Apple Sour, made from fresh, handpicked local golden apples.

Food at The Mews, Barbados

Golden Apple Sour   Soursop Mousse

Shortly after the cocktails, more guests arrive and mouthwatering canapés start to flow. I’m a foodie, I make no bones about it and my palate appreciates great fare. Bite sized pieces of heaven in the form of golden Yorkshire Pudding with tender chunks of beef, Sweet Potato Mash with lamb and the most enchanting Risotto with tender lamb belly danced delightfully across my lips. Desert comes in the form of Soursop Mousse and mini Guava Cheesecake. My palate discretely says “thank you Chris, I think I’m in love.” Now – if you didn’t know, The Mews fully supports local, organic farm fresh produce and is proud to implement their offerings throughout their menu. As a local, born and bred in this 166 square mile paradise called Barbados. I must tell you, if you’ve never eaten “to die for” Risotto with local lamb belly while the dulcet tones of ‘Krisire’, the talented live singer for the night, serenades with a sultry rendition of Rihanna’s “Rude Boy,” You have not lived! I digress however, my mind, humming with the wonderful atmosphere, delicious cocktails and decadent bites, accepts Chris’ invitation to show our group, the new renovations and offerings at The Mews.

We ascended the stairs and if I was not already impressed by the variety of local art on the first floor of this eclectic “townhouse,” The sight of the legendary Bob Marley adorning the walls, absolutely wowed me. The artist Jeena Chatrani’s impression was on point! Proud lions and regal African women, also held prime positions and were equally as stunning. Latoya, a skilled waitress, deftly moved around our awestruck group to attend to waiting patrons while Chris pointed out the new renovations and additions.

Views from The Mews, Barbados

Quaint street view from The Mews to Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, Barbados

Already existing is an intimate balcony overlooking the picturesque street with views to the high end shopping complex Limegrove Lifestyle Centre. A beautiful balcony with cosy seating has been added on the inside with views of 3 large portraits of singing sensation Rihanna, also born and bred in Barbados! (Rihanna, you need to see these.) A gorgeous chandelier is suspended over “The Courtyard,” and, according to our host, the best place to celebrate weddings, events and private parties. The bathrooms are also newly renovated and accented by art pieces titled “Garden Thoughts” and another portrait titled “Vision” both by the talented artist Vishni. They give you life!  Chris goes on to laud local Executive Chef Anife Best – also on his creativity and ability to marry local dishes in a tantalizing union of flavor. What was notable for me as well was Chris’ gratitude and appreciation for his repeat clients who “often come every year to enjoy house staples such at the Tenderloin and Green Thai Curry.”

It’s 8:15pm and I’m stuffed. Krisire aka Kristen Walker continues to serenade us with all genres of tunes accompanied by super savvy guitarist Russell. We’ve had excellent food and drinks but we do have one more question. What’s on for Old Years Night? Here’s the skinny! A five-course meal for USD$200 featuring the scrumptious “Farm to Table” menu followed by an After Party with sparklers, Djs and great company or pay USD $25 for the after party only which runs till the wee hours of the morning! As the night drew to a close, we had one more surprise…a prize draw! Sadly I didn’t win the prize, but I won the experience, a chance to put the Blue Sky Luxury stamp of approval on a classy Euro fusion eatery with an amazing host, Chris. Sophie who worked tirelessly to ensure that all was well and compliments to the exceptional chef Anife Best and the entire team at The Mews. We had an amazing time and urge you to visit The Mews. Bon Appétit!
