Porters, A Historical Masterpiece

Our newest Barbados vacation villa
By Blue Sky Luxury on Wednesday, February 20, 2019

Nestled on the grounds of Porters Great House Estate is the lovely Porters Villa. As the direct representatives of this lovely home, we, the team at Blue Sky Luxury had to share a bit of history about this stunning Barbados property. From our Reservations Specialist who’ve visited the cottage and know it intimately, to our Property Managers who ensure that all is in perfect working order during your stay, we hope that you’ll fall in love with Porters Villa just like we have.

Brief History

Porters Villa and its enchanted Great House, were originally part of a vast sugar estate. The name Porters came from William Porter, a member of the Barbados House of Assembly who once owned the estate. By the 1720's, it had passed via two marriages to the Honourable Dudley Woodbridge. This wealthy merchant and landowner was also the head of the Royal Africa Company, and from 1741, his son was Rector of St. James Parish Church, where plaques to the memory of the family still remain at the property. By the late 18th century, Porters was owned by the illustrious Alleyne family, in whose hands it stayed for generations.

The Magical Estate

As you enter the stately gates, it’s feels like you’ve been transported to a magical era, where time has stopped in glorious fashion. Ancient mahogany trees, birdsong and sweet silence accompany the drive to the cottage. The feeling of coming from the bustle of Holetown into your private retreat is like no other. Explore the expansive grounds at your leisure. Visit the shell of the old sugar factory or view the mill wall – once used to grind corn. Porters Villa was once the old carriage house and has been lovingly refurbished as a 3 bedroom cottage for guests. An outstanding pavilion complements the pool which was home to a bathing pool in the 18th Century. A chapel still remains on the grounds while the modern gazebo provides an addition spot to relax and enjoy the serene ambience of the grounds.
