Have Yourself a Merry Barbados Christmas!

Traditional Christmas carols have been known to set the tone for what we expect at Christmas time - we dream of a white Christmas, and the ornate foliage is always hollies and mistletoes. However, the Barbados remix of these carols goes a little different - you’ll be dreaming of turquoise blues, and will quickly realise that the holly-decked halls have been traded for palm- and poinsettia frangipani-fringed coasts and streets! Barbados at Christmas is magical, and to experience the island at this most wonderful time of the year is to witness an even more joyful, warming spirit than the already welcoming personality innate of Barbadians and their heritage. So, add these five things to your list (be sure to check it twice!) and you will understand why Barbados may be your best Christmas gift yet!

Seasonal Eats

If you are lucky enough to be traveling through a traditional Barbadian neighbourhood around Christmas time, the aroma of home cooking will linger and pique your palate. The aromas are those of delicacies such as macaroni pie, jug-jug, ham, sorrel and others that will gain no justice if we try to describe them! These delicacies range from the richest, spiciest stews to the more acquired tastes of pureed meats and peas, and the signature inebriated fruity cake aptly named great cake and mince pies! But if baking is not your thing, don’t worry. Let your chef know that you'd like to try all the Bajan specialties this season.

Christmas Morning in Queen’s Park

On Christmas morning, on the outskirts of the heart of Bridgetown, a breath of lively colours and a convivial atmosphere fill Queen’s Park. Barbadians from all walks of life show up dressed in their Sunday - well, Christmas best - to the annual Christmas in the park mingle. Although the emphasis on this morning is donning your best threads, the main attraction is really the festive performances by the 100-plus year-old Royal Police Band, which serenades the audience and sets a soothing tone for the rest of the day.

Christmas at the Prime Minister’s residence

Each Christmas, the Prime Minister’s residence at Ilaro Court opens its gardens to the general public during Christmas events hosted at the property. One of the most popular staples is Carols by Candlelight, an evening of caroling and performances by local artistes, children’s groups and other acts on grounds of this stately home. Patrons of the event are usually seated on blankets spread on the lawn or perched on portable chairs, and the atmosphere is warming and welcoming, wishing all a wonderful night. And, in the true spirit of giving, all girls and boys under the age of 12 come bearing gifts for children’s charities, while further proceeds are donated to charitable causes all across the island, which makes it all even more gratifying!

Shopping

There is no way to talk about Christmas without mentioning shopping! With extended opening hours and unlimited duty-free shopping, the main shopping districts of the capital Bridgetown are always a hive of activity. The hive then spreads to other commercial districts such as the west coast’s Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, confirming that Christmas truly is in the air!

Unlimited Sunshine

We assure you that Jack Frost won’t be nipping at your toes anytime soon during your Christmas holiday in Barbados! So dress for the weather, clock as much sun time, and explore the island’s adventures and activities - whether on land or at sea!

Book your Barbados holiday today and we’ll see you at Christmas.
